Also an Audio Technica turntable on craigslist All for $500.00. It is the best stereo i have ever heard. The Alpha 50s and the sub alone sound superb.

Does anyone own Infinity Alpha 50's? If so, how do you like them, and how would you compare them to other speakers in the same category? I own a pair and I love them, but it seems so hard to find any real reviews about them, and I am curious as to what others think. Also on a side note, how do they compare performance wise to the Beta's?

Also on a side note, how do they compare performance wise to the Beta's? Our setup includes the 50's in front, 37c center, 20's as surrounds and when used 10's as surround backs. I was running a 1200 sub but after it died I switched to a Velodyne. Having owned the 50's for a number of years I can say without reservation that they are excellent tower speakers. I've been told that they rival or may even be superior to the Beta's. In fact, you can take a look at my 50's as shown on CNET.com. Check it out at http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-10167_7-6751133-1.html I just found a review of the 50's, here's a link - http://www.reviewcentre.com/review18654.html Best of luck, 49Merc

No one had replied and I had given up looking at the thread, as you can tell by the dates. As a matter of fact, I had already seen your setup at cnet. I must say I'm very impressed. In retrospect, I should have chosen the cherry alpha's, I took the black. When I purchased my Alpha's, Crutchfield threw in 2 free Primus which I use for surrounds. I also kind of wish that I bought the matching Alpha's you have. The Primus sound good, but I bet yours have more body to the sound. Perhaps I could replace them with the new Beta surrounds, as they would probably match better.

Thanks for the reply and compliments. Yes, the Beta's would be a better match than the Primus. Although, if available the Alpha 20's would be the ideal match.
Best of luck. 49Merc

Just stumbled over this thread..I own the Infinity Alpha 50, bought them 3 years ago at CC, on sale. I am very happy with them, but for pure music IMO they don't hold a candle to my old Wega speakers I own at home in Germany (to heavy, couldn't bring them over here ;-) ). I have completed my 5.1 setup with all Infinity speakers: an Alpha 50 center cheap from ebay, two infinity 750 satellites and an Infinity Primus sub. All in all I am very pleased with our HT setup.

'ID' simply stands for Internet Direct. Any speakers that are sold directly over the internet but not generally in brick and mortar stores fall into this category. Examples include Elemental Designs, HSU, AV123, etc.

Has anyone tried biamping the Alphas? Does it yield improved sound? Just curious.
Also, the Beta owners have their own thread..where are all the Alpha owners?

Alas, there does not seem to be many Alpha owners on this forum, judging by the lack of responses. I hope I'm wrong though

Here is what Infinity has to say about biamping (bi-wiring) the Alpha's. The outer connection panel and internal dividing network of the Alpha 20, 40 and Alpha 50 are designed so that separate sets of speaker cables can be attached to the low-frequency transducer and midrange /highfrequency transducer portions of this dividing network. This is called bi-wiring. Bi-wiring can provide several sonic advantages and considerably more flexibility in power amplifier selection. My 50's are bi-wired and if my AVR gave me the option I would bi-wire my 20's. The result is outstanding. I can tell you that the sound quality is fuller and basically more pleasing. Like I mentioned to bi-wire you must have an AVR that supports this process. For example, with my Denon AVR 987 (2807) I had a choice, have 6.1/7.1 or bi-wire and have 5.1. I choose to run 5.1 and bi-wire. I bet that most people do not bi-amp/bi-wire because their AVR does not give them the option. 49Merc

I've read in the 1800's manual about the biamping (and also, you give up 6.1/7.1 to do this, but 5.1 is all I need and have) so I was curious if the results are an audible sound improvement.

Here's a suggestion, seek opinions from Yamaha users via a serch for RXV1800 on the AVS AVR forum. Best of luck to you. 49Merc

49Merc, thanks for the responses about bi-amping. I don't believe my receiver supports it, though it does have 6 channels, I haven't found any way to assign the rear surrounds to the fronts. Perhaps I'll dig out the manual, it's a sony 2100ES if you happen to know anything about it.
Also, seeing as how I have my Alpha's wired one way, does it matter which posts I use? I have mine wired to the bottom binding posts, does it matter which you use? It sounds fine when I play them, but perhaps one post is better than the other? I'm not sure, any info you have would be appreciated.

Here is a post on the Alpha vs Beta, I have found:
http://forums.audioholics.com/forums..hp/t-3560.html While I am not going to switch I still would be interested whether there is really a huge audio quality difference between the two series as the second poster (a designer of the Betas (!)) on this thread claims.

They both use the exact same material for the drivers, have similar frequency response, and sensitivity ratings. The Beta's can handle more wattage, 50 more I believe, but that is neither here nor there. Keep in mind I've never heard the Beta's, but like I said, could there be a big difference? Would anyone else like to chime in on this?

Based on pure hearsay, I have been told that there is not a tremendous difference. Certainly not enough to move from Alpha's to Beta's. The logical performance progression, (Infinity wise) would be from Alpha's to Cascade's. Now with that said, once Alpha's are not longer available THEN the Beta's become the logical mid-range Infinity speaker choice. That's with Primus as the entry level, Beta as the mid level and Cascade as the high level. When considering smaller size scale I have learned that indeed the Infinity 4000 series is an excellent choice. Here is a simple perforamance/value Infinity Systems speaker rating scheme. (Given all of these products remain available on the internet or retail market place). Performance -Full Size

I thought you might like to see a re-finished Alpha 50 and 20. Being the eccentric person that I am I knew that I would not be happy with my black Apha's until their finish matched our AV cabinets antique maple look. Well, after many hours of labor and more than one failure the end result was great!

Now with that said, the performance of the 5.1 setup, IMO, is super with the biamped 50's. I guess I maybe opening up myself to ridicule but I use upper grade speaker cable and connectors.

i've have Alpha 50's 4 in fact , front and back mains and Alpha 20's for back surround, with 3 alpha 1200s subs, and a 37C center, i have the 50's all bi-amped, on the bottom i have 200watt outlaw amps, 4 mono blocks one for each tower woofer , with all the middle and top end ran by a outlaw 7125, 7ch, 125watts per channel, sound is MUCH better with bi-amping. all with outlaw connecters and Monster M-series speaker cable, bi-amping is the only way to go , IMO, soundstage is way deeper and if you run a 37C center this speaker alone will totally blow you away, not high end??? true but listen to one if you can find one and wow !! is what you'll say.. 100-200 bucks you can still find them.. the Beta was not the speaker the Alpha was, again IMO

hey thanks 49Merc, running a outlaw 990 pre/pro also with a wadia 170i transport with a built in DAC by Doug Jessie, what a wonderful unit to have. play a Flash drive unit {itouch} on this and i sold my denon DP 47F turntable wasn't even close the wadia blew it away that's right digital with a great DAC blew it away. but the wadia bypasses the iTouch guts so you know it's going to sound better. dam close to high end.. i mean very close.. which i'm not {high end} i'd say middle of the road on my system, but on my system this baby rocks.. also run a DBX 4BX and a Rane 44 HT equalizer. back to subject yes bi-amp a.s.a.p. you'll love when you do, then don't put these to close to walls they just don't sound as good to me, the rane 44 takes care of these problems, they are a tad weak on the bottom so a GOOD sub or subs will be needed, i really love my Alphas and once broke in they are a great speaker, but in a infinity alpha HT set-up must have the 37c center or one as good or better..

Infinity Alpha 20 Speaker Reviews

Ha, what a blast from the past. I stumbled over this thread again while researching and coincidentally it was reactivated just yesterday.
So I still have my Alphas, now connected to a Yamaha RX-A2000 (took me until end of last year to finally upgrade my receiver), but still not biamped. After reading through this thread again, I really should try it. I sold my small Alpha Center and replaced it with an Infinity Primus PC350 and it made a big difference. The small Alpha was too weak. I could not get my hands on the matching larger Alpha center model. Now yesterday my subwoofer started to act up. An Infinity PS-10. I bet the amplifier is shot and it may cost too much to get the part. Looking to replace it and researching (affordable) alternatives. Would the Polk Audio PSW505 be a good match? It is around 200 bucks. There is also an Infinity Classia PSW310BK 10' Powered Subwoofer for around 300, which might be a better match to my all-Infinity setup. But it is wireless and I don't know if that is so reliable. Cable is not an issue. Any suggestions? Thanks. Bjorn

Wow, great to see people still enjoying their Alpha 50's. I'm still using mine in my downstairs setup..minus the surrounds (which my son was tugging on all day). nich, I'm not sure if you'll notice any difference with bi-amping. The consensus around here is that it is pretty much useless. Give it a shot and tell us what you think!

If I have some cable sitting around, I may give it a shot. Can't hurt. I did have some cracked/broken off binding posts over the years and fortunately Infinity still had parts to repair them.
